The Principality of Sealand
sealand.jpgThe Principality of Sealand is a micronation situated on a pontoon called Rough Towers six miles off the coast of southeast England. Sealand is squatted by the family of Paddy Roy Bates and their associates since 1967. In 1968 shots were fired at a British navy ship from the Sealand pontoon. The british court dealing this case decided that the offense had occurred outside the borders of the United Kingdom. Paddy Roy Bates, the Roy of Sealand, a former pirate-radio broadcaster, major and fisherman cites this case as an evidence of sovereignty. Later he came to an agreement with the server-hosting company HavenCo to establish an offshore data haven on Sealand (Wikipedia-Link). The slightly confused "official website" of "Prime Minister" Johannes W.F. Seiger gives further insight in the technological potential of Sealand: The Sealand Generator. The inofficial Passports sold here were involved in several high-profile crimes. More information on Sealand maps, money and stamps and the national anthem "E Mare Libertas" (From the Sea, Freedom).
